No I don’t mean to grow your business in a vague sense, or just get more profit (although a necessary bi-product), beat the competition or even retire and travel the world so you can have a rest from all that business building.
That’s not your mission.
Your mission is what you stand for and it affects what your business stands for. If you are reading this and you work for a business rather than own one. It’s not just getting through your day so you can get a pay cheque to get your bills paid so you can save to retire and travel the world.
If even a Burrito has a Mission?
The skill of talking to your boss, your co workers, your employees, your business colleagues, your network, your prospective clients or current clients, the press or even the wider world begins with Mission.
That Mission leads to vision.
That Vision leads to a serving
Who are you serving? Why do you want to serve them better than anyone else? Why do you want your 8 hrs behind a desk to be more meaningful than 8 hrs behind a desk and an amount in the bank?
Why are you working at what you are working at?
What calls to you in the quietest moments before you pull back the duvet and push through another day?
If a Burrito can have a Mission (it might be the experience of the tastiest stop on the way home you’ve ever had) then unless you tap into yours, you are wasting your breath trying to get your message across with words only. No matter how well crafted or how well practiced.
They will fall to the ground, empty and devoid of meaning. But a Mission is like rocket fuel. It takes you a different direction from the field waiting in line huffing and puffing for the lights to turn green, bibbing horns to get a plan and a move on.
You see a Mission lives deep within and that’s the first place to begin looking. Not with strategy but with source and often in secret. It doesn’t stay that way too long though. Just enough time to grow passion, purpose and heart.
The when you craft you message, your pitch, your talks, your plans. They come from a deepness that cannot be bought. It is formed. It’s what draws people to you even when they don’t know why they are drawn.
Don’t try and copy or capture someone else’s fire though. You can’t your fingers burn as there is nothing tangible to hold other than a feeling of warmth, of truth and of coming home to something you know you left and need to refine.
They say to make gold it has to go into the fire so all it’s impurities come to the surface and can be skimmed off. Then what’s left is pure essence.
That’s where mission ones from. The refiners fire. The road less travelled by someone else – why? Because it’s been done! We can model a skill like carpentry but we cannot model a feeling of impact, inspiration and influence.
It cannot be taken, copied pursued or grabbed in a power struggle for the top. It dances to the beat of it’s own drum and draws the people it needs to.
If your 2018 has started with serious plans to make 2018 your ‘best’ year blah blah blah. What if this year you made sure you were on Mission first.
You’ll find more flows through you that has real impact than you could ever believe.
At Talk Skills our Mission is “doing all your communication with heart, passion and purpose” and that starts with mastering your own mission and message on the inside then the outside.
If your plans don’t thrill you, scare you, serve someone, make them laugh giggle, smile, cry, gasp, then is that the best way to show up for 8 hrs a day at work and then disconnect at home for a few more?
